Profoto 8A Assistants Event in Chicago

Impressions of the Profoto 8A after Assistant Event #1

Two shooting stages, eight Profoto 8A packs, a steady stream of photographers and dancers, and a few giant boxes of sandwiches: those were the key ingredients to the season's first Profoto Pro-8A demo sessions for photo assistants.

In Chicago last Thursday, Profoto (and Calumet) brought its new workhorse packs to Space Stage Studios and hired teams of dancers, then let photo assistants shoot away.

Each shooting stage had three photographers shooting live at any given time, using Air transmitters that wirelessly communicate with the packs.

Now, with a lot of packs, three photographers triggering lights simultaneously is a recipe for disaster. Especially when you have dancers jumping off walls and making leaping contortions, fingers are squeezing shutters more often than they're poised and waiting.

The 8As kept the pace with ease. Sure, there were a few misfires--synchronous bursts will do that--but images overwhelmingly turned out spot on.

What makes it even more impressive: the packs were doing this for 5 solid hours. Assistants came and went. Exhausted dancers switched shifts. But the Profoto 8As kept on popping away.

TimeFrames Call for Entries: 70th Anniversary Edition

In honor of our 70 years, we are awarding $70 Calumet gift cards to our three favorite contributions to the 7th edition of TimeFrames. This time around, our collaborative photo essay explores the theme "Timeless".

What or who have you photographed that has transcended the test of time? What photos have you taken that capture the then and the now, the past and the future?

Choose the image you feel best says "Timeless": the interpretation is up to you.

Email that one photo with your name, its title, and the equipment you shot it with to timeframes@calumetphoto.com.

Photos will be displayed in a video slideshow on our site, our favorites will be featured in a special gallery, and the top three selected by our panel will receive a $70 Calumet Photo gift card.

TimeFrames Guidelines

• Send ONE image to timeframes@calumetphoto.com by 4 p.m. CST November 10, 2009.
• Only ONE photo from each participant is eligible. Additional submissions will be disqualified.
• The photo should be taken by you and should be your interpretation of the theme "timeless".
• Please include your name, title of the photo, the location of the image, and what gear you used to get the shot.
• Size your image to between 600 and 1100 pixels on its longest size.
• We stamp any published instances with your name and a copyright seal that is legible in the size it appears, and as such prefer images without personal watermarks.
• It is your responsibility to have appropriate permissions for the publication of the image you send.
• By submitting the image, you are granting Calumet Photographic unrestricted permission to publish the photograph in material related to TimeFrames and its promotion. You still retain your copyright privileges, however you waive rights to royalties/compensation and further approval when published by Calumet Photographic.

Canon 7D Firmware Update

Canon has responded quickly to early reports that the 7D was--in certain cases--producing ghosting of previous frames on images shot in continuous mode.

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following fixes.

1. Corrects a phenomenon that in images captured by continuous shooting, and under certain conditions, barely noticeable traces of the immediately preceding frame may be visible.
